As a Crossfitter, I had never run more than 3-5 miles, but had a goal of completing a half marathon. I had no idea where to start. Ilene’s program made training so simple. I had fun in the process! Kate R.
Most people preparing for a running event have either been running short distances or they are coming right off the couch. (Ever hear the expression “couch to 5k?”) The majority are NOT doing CrossFit workouts.
Contrary to what you hear, CrossFit is a great base for and compliment to endurance training. First of all, the strength you have gained from doing CrossFit will help you stave off the inevitable overuse injuries. I was NEVER more injured than when I was simply a runner. In the 13 years I have been doing CrossFit, along with my endurance sports, I have barely had a single injury! Secondly, you will come to running with a good deal of “cardio fitness” from your CrossFit training. You will have run, rowed, used the ski erg, and done so many workouts for time. This will bring you to running with a great base of cardio fitness.
Honestly – you will be surprised at what you can accomplish right out of the gate.
Additionally, since you will continue to do CrossFit while you train for your endurance event, your sport-specific training will be LESS and it will be DIFFERENT from someone who is solely doing endurance sports to train.
Remember, more isn’t better. Better is better.
